Access to for­eign mar­kets is indis­pensable for com­pa­nies in the auto­mo­ti­ve indus­try. Asi­de from the US mar­ket, growth today is con­cen­tra­ted in the fol­lo­wing mar­kets: Eas­tern Euro­pe, Asia, Latin Ame­ri­ca and other emer­ging mar­kets whe­re the car owner­ship rate is on the rise [source: VDA]. Kee­ping up with this growth requi­res glo­bal trade agree­ments, but sup­pli­er con­tracts can also be used to secu­re sale reve­nues. The UN Con­ven­ti­on on Inter­na­tio­nal Sale of Goods in par­ti­cu­lar offers opti­ons for inter­na­tio­nal sup­p­ly con­tracts. We have been able to arran­ge a pre­sen­ta­ti­on by Prof. Dr. Burk­hard Piltz, an expert in inter­na­tio­nal con­tract law, who will shed light on the fol­lo­wing aspects:

• Why avo­id effec­ti­ve exclu­si­on of the UN CISG?
• Inco­terms 2020?
• New deve­lo­p­ments in inter­na­tio­nal pay­ment guarantees

Prof. Dr. Piltz is a part­ner in the law firm of Ahlers & Vogel in Ham­burg and spe­cia­li­zes in inter­na­tio­nal com­mer­cial law, par­ti­cu­lar­ly inter­na­tio­nal sales con­tracts and rela­ted are­as (UN CISG, Inco­terms, dis­tri­bu­ti­on law, etc.). In addi­ti­on to his work as an att­or­ney, he fre­quent­ly ser­ved as an arbi­tra­tor in inter­na­tio­nal procedures.

Prof. Dr. Piltz is Chair­man of the Exe­cu­ti­ve Com­mit­tee of the European-Latin Ame­ri­can Arbi­tra­ti­on Asso­cia­ti­on (ELArb) in Ham­burg. He is also coun­try expert for Ger­ma­ny at the Inter­na­tio­nal Dis­tri­bu­ti­on Insti­tu­te (IDI) in Turin and was Chair­man of the Com­mit­tee for Euro­pean Con­tract Law estab­lished by the Ger­man Fede­ral Bar Asso­cia­ti­on. He is Coun­sell­or to the Pre­si­dent of the Inter­na­tio­nal Asso­cia­ti­on of Lawy­ers (UIA) and a mem­ber of the Inter­na­tio­nal Inco­terms® 2020 Draf­ting Group at the Inter­na­tio­nal Cham­ber of Com­mer­ce (ICC) in Paris. Burg­hard Piltz tea­ches inter­na­tio­nal pri­va­te law and the UN CISG and was named hono­ra­ry pro­fes­sor in 1997. Prof. Dr. Piltz has published books about inter­na­tio­nal com­mer­cial law and Inco­terms and is the publisher of the Münch­ner Anwalts­hand­buch Inter­na­tio­na­les Wirt­schafts­recht [The Munich Attorney’s Manu­al of Inter­na­tio­nal Busi­ness Law].
